Advantages and disadvantages of merchandising

  • Knowledge base

Effective merchandising is undoubtedly one of the reasons for significant improvements in sales performance. Well-planned merchandising activities carried out on many levels can not only support sales, but also build brand awareness and recognition among customers. However, there is a fine line between professional merchandising and the trap into which a merchandising service implementer can fall. While there are definitely more advantages than disadvantages of merchandising, it is important to remember that poorly executed merchandising plans can be counterproductive to the intended results. Therefore, one of the key concepts in merchandising execution is consistency.

Benefits of merchandising

The effectiveness of merchandising depends on the professionalism of the agency carrying out the activity. Although different strategies are adopted for organizing space in a huge supermarket and others in a neighborhood store, both cases have one thing in common. The need to carry out activities calculated to encourage the customer to buy. Because a greater number of buyers translates directly into the state of the owner's cash register. Taking stock of the advantages and disadvantages of merchandising, it is also impossible to ignore the issue of store recognition itself. If a customer doesn't know about the existence of a particular retailer, he won't go shopping there. A merchandising strategy combined with appropriate marketing activities from the very first moments of a store's operation, and often even weeks before the launch, can build the right awareness in the consumer. With all kinds of POS materials, i.e. posters, banners and flyers, as well as promotional actions, the customer will be encouraged to use the services of a particular store. He will enter it and be eager to shop. When it also turns out that the space inside is organized in an appropriate manner, and the assortment is not lacking, more - when there is even seemingly a little too much of it - in the customer's mind an image of the given point will be established, as an honest source, where he can always come to buy his favorite and necessary products. The consumer will return and perhaps still persuade others. Once an entrepreneur understands what merchandising is and begins to use it, he will undoubtedly soon receive a strong case for the appropriateness of the decision to start doing so. Although initially it may seem that the cost of carrying out merchandising activities is greater than the effectiveness of merchandising itself, in the long run it will allow to increase turnover. Not only that, but professional merchandising agencies are also involved in providing training for trade employees. Thus, it may turn out that in the long run, the involvement of professionals will have a beneficial effect on sales even after the cooperation has ceased. Vendors and warehouse employees themselves, having the necessary knowledge in this area, will be able to organize the space of the store, arrange products in the right way and thus influence the very effectiveness of merchandising themselves.

Does merchandising have disadvantages? If so, what are they?

It's really hard to find flaws in properly executed merchandising activities. The problems should be found in making mistakes and duplicating them. Lack of effectiveness of merchandising can occur in a situation in which the entrepreneur does not conduct activities comprehensively. For example, the space in the store is organized in an exemplary way, everything in accordance with the art of merchandising, but the goods are missing. The customer is guided appropriately in principle even before entering the store. The point itself smells beautiful, the consumer tries the product on display at the tasting, the aisles are wide, the flyers are full, but it is impossible to buy anything. This is a basic mistake that will ruin even the best efforts to improve sales performance. The situation can also be different. An entrepreneur will think that displaying a stand of flyers and whole pallets of products on the store to create an impression of abundance is already merchandising. Well, no. Imagine a customer squeezing between pallets in a cramped aisle and on top of that something else falls on him. Will he perceive any pleasure in the shopping experience? The answer to this question comes to mind.

How then to avoid such situations? In the first place, you should hand over merchandising tasks to a professional company. It is they who, based on their knowledge and experience, will adjust the strategy, implement it and train the store's employees so that the effectiveness of merchandising is maximized not only during the campaign, but also after it. All that will be left for the entrepreneur is to watch the increasing turnover and keep an eye on the consequences. When the basic principles of merchandising are maintained, there will be no need to worry about improving sales results.
